Los Esposos Torres-Sifuentes

Hace 33 años, un día 16 de noviembre del 1974, se conocieron en persona, por primera vez, Johnny Torres-Guzmán y Amelia Sifuentes Reyes. Los detalles envolviendo este primer encuentro varían dependiendo a quién de los dos se le pregunta. De acuerdo con lo que dice Johnny, fue Amelia quien lo fue a buzcar a su pueblo de Trujillo Alto. La historia vá más o menos así:

Amelia era muy buena amiga de una joven llamada Carmín, la cual había sufrido un accidente. Por mucho tiempo Amelia continuó ayudando a Carmín y siendo una de sus mejores amigas. Carmín, queriendo demostrar su agradecimiento, le prometió a Amelia encontrarle un marido. A esto Amelia respondió con molestia ya que ella le andaba huyendo al matrimonio. ¡Hasta monja quiso ser en un dado momento!

Bueno, Carmín trató de conseguirle novio a Amelia, pero fracasó repetidamente. Un día ella decidió hablar con Johnny acerca de Amelia, y así quedó Johnny enamorado de Amelia, sin haberla visto tan siquiera. En una tarde, el 16 de noviembre del 1974, Amelia fue a Trujillo Alto a visitar a su amiga Carmín. De viaje se detuvo en una gasolinera donde fue Johnny quien la vino a atender. Al verla Johnny, él se dirijió a ella y le dijo: "¿Tú eres Amelia?" Ella le contestó, "Sí." Él respondió: "Yo soy Johnny." A lo cual Amelia respondió: "Yo ni lo conozco." Así fue el primer encuentro de los novios, que un año más tarde llegarían a ser marido y mujer.

Un año después de haberse unido en matrimonio ellos recibieron el regalo de navidad más preciado, su primer hijo el cual llamaron Emanuel. Dos años y medio más tarde Johnny recibió un preciado regalo de día de Padres, su hija Eimy. El día 8 de enero del 1983 Amelia y su hija Eimy recibieron al Señor Jesucristo como su Salvador. La entrada de Jesús en la familia Torres-Sifuentes fue el punto clave que mantuvo la familia unida hasta el momento. En ese entonces Amelia comenzó a orarle a Dios pidiéndo un hijo. Ella quería tener la dicha de concebir a un hijo bajo la sombra del Omnipotente. El día 30 de abril del 1984 Dios le concedió a Amelia su mejor regalo de cumpleaños, su hijo prometido, Isaac.

Dos años más tarde, un viernes 18 de abril del 1986, Johnny acceptó a Jesucristo como su Salvador, completando el círculo de la familia cristiana. Por los próximos años Amelia y Johnny se mantuvieron fieles a Dios, estudiando la palabra de Dios, asistiendo a la iglesia, siendo miembros fieles de la viña del Señor, y trabajando fuerte para mantener su familia unida y próspera.

En el año 1989 Amelia y Johnny comenzaron una escuela bíblica de extención detrás de su casa, la cual luego se convertiría en la primera iglesia pastoreada por el Rev. Johnny Torres. En el año 1992 el Reverendo Johnny Torres fue finalmente ordenado al pastorado, y la Reverenda Amelia Sifuentes fue licenciada como misionera de la iglesia. Poco sabían los hermanos que un año más tarde sus vidas y la de su familia cambiaría drásticamente.

En diciembre 29 del 1993, Amelia, Emanuel e Isaac partieron hacia los Estados Unidos, con la espera de reunirse con Johnny y Eimy 6 meses más tarde. Por seis meses Amelia y Johnny hablaron por teléfono diariamente, llorando y añorando estar juntos nuevamente. La soledad carcomía los huesos de la familia, mientras trataban todos de hacer lo que era mejor para la familia y la obra del Señor. Finalmente, en Julio 1, 1994, se reunió la familia en los Estados Unidos, lugar que se convertiría en su hogar hasta la actualidad.

Vivir en Columbus, Ohio no ha sido fácil para los esposos Torres-Sifuentes. Aquí ambos se enfrentaron a mucha adversidad y dificultades los cuales no desearían recordar. Pero, se mantuvieron fieles a Dios en todo momento. En el verano del 1995 Johnny y Amelia, junto con su hija Eimy, comenzaron una escuela bíblica de verano en el complejo de apartamentos donde residían. En el verano del 1997, Johnny tuvo el honor y privilegio de bautizar el prmer grupo de su nueva iglesia. Isaac, su hijo menor, fue parte de ese grupo.

En el año 1999, un día 15 de septiembre, un logro más fue añadido a la lista de la familia Torres-Sifuentes, Kaylie Renee Torres-Malis fue nacida, hija de Emanuel Torres. Los abuelos orgullosos corrieron a recibirla con brazos abiertos. Desde ese entonces Amelia y Johnny le ruegan a Dios por su nieta y su bienestar.

En el año 2006, el día 22 del mes de julio, llegó el más reciente logro de la familia. Seryantes Phlaveon Torres-Lofton, hijo de Isaac Torres-Sifuentes, fue nacido. Un año más tarde, el día 15 de julio del 2007, Johnny participó en la ceremonia matrimonial de su hijo Isaac Torres-Sifuentes y Keturah Lofton.

Johnny y Amelia oran por la salvación de su familia, su salud, su bienestar y su unidad—hoy y hasta la segunda venida de Cristo.

 

The Torres-Sifuentes Couple

33 years ago, on a 16th of November, for the first time, Johnny Torres-Guzmán and Amelia Sifuentes-Torres met in person. The details involving this first encounter vary depending on which of the two is asked. According to what Johnny says, it was Amelia who went to seek him in his town of Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico. The story, more or less, goes like this:

Amelia was a very good friend of a young lady called Carmín, who had suffered an accident. For a long time, Amelia continued helping Carmín and being one of her best friends, even when others seemed to disappear. Carmín, wanting to show her gratitude, promised Amelia she would find her a husband. Amelia responded to this with anger since she was running away from marriage. She even wanted to be a nun at one time!

Well, Carmín tried to find Amelia a boyfriend, but failed repeatedly. One day, she decided to talk to Johnny about Amelia, and that’s how Johnny fell in love with Amelia, without having at least seen her. One afternoon, the 16th of November of 1974, Amelia went to Trujillo Alto to visit her friend Carmín. On her way, she stopped at a gas station where it was Johnny who came to assist her. When he saw her, Johnny approached her and said: “Are you Amelia?” She answered, “Yes.” He responded: “I am Johnny.” To which Amelia responded: “I don’t even know you.” (This looses its humor in translation. The syllables Joh-nny, are pronounced in the same way that the words “Yo ni” which are the first words used in the statement “I don’t even know you” and take on the meaning “I don’t even”.)

Such was the first encounter of the couple that a year later would come to be husband and wife.

A year after having united in marriage, they received the most precious Christmas’ gift, their first son whom they called Emanuel. Two years and a half later Johnny received a precious Father’s Day gift, his daughter Eimy. The 8th of January of 1983 Amelia and her daughter Eimy received the Lord Jesus Christ as their savior. The entrance of Jesus in the Torres-Sifuentes family was the key point that kept the family united until today. At that time, Amelia started to pray to God asking for a son. She wanted the blessing of conceiving a child under the shadow of the Almighty. The 30th of April of 1984 God blessed Amelia with the best birthday gift, her promised son, Isaac.

Two years later, on Friday, April 18 of 1986, Johnny accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior, completing the circle of a Christian family. For the following years Amelia and Johnny remained faithful to God, studying the word of God, assisting church, being faithful members of the Lord’s vineyard, and working hard to keep their family united and prosperous.

In 1989 Amelia and Johnny started an extension bible school behind their house in Juncos, Puerto Rico, which later would become the first church lead by Rev. Johnny Torres-Guzmán. On August 10th, 1991, Johnny celebrated his birthday baptizing his daughter Eimy. In the year 1992, Reverend Johnny Torres-Guzmán was finally ordained to the ministry, and Reverend Amelia Sifuentes-Reyes was licensed as the missionary of the church. Little did they know that a year later their life would change drastically.

On December 29 of 1993, Amelia, Emanuel and Isaac left for the United States of America, with the hopes of reuniting with Johnny and Eimy 6 months later. For six months Amelia and Johnny talked over the phone daily, crying and longing to be together again. The loneliness eroded the bones of the family, while they all tried to do what was best for the family and the calling of the Lord. Finally, on July 1, 1994, the family reunited in the United States of America, a place that would become their home until today.

Living in Columbus, Ohio has not been easy for the Torres-Sifuentes couple. Here they have both confronted a lot of adversity and difficulties they would rather not recall. However, they remained faithful to the God at all times. In the summer of 1995 Johnny and Amelia, along with their daughter Eimy, began a vacation Bible School in the apartment complex where they resided. This was the beginning of what is today Templo Cristiano Emanuel of Columbus Ohio. (see church history for details)

In the summer of 1997, Johnny had the honor and privilege of baptizing the first group of this new church. Isaac, his youngest son, was part of this group.

In the year 1999, the 15th day of the month of September, another triumph was added to the list of the Torres-Sifuentes family. Kaylie Renee Torres-Malis was born, daughter of Emanuel Torres-Sifuentes. The proud grandparents ran to receive her with open arms. Since then Amelia and Johnny pray to God for their granddaughter and her well-being.

In the year 2006, the 22nd day of the month of July, the latest triumph of the family arrived. Seryantes Phlaveon Torres-Lofton, son of Isaac Torres-Sifuentes, was born. A year later, the 15th of July of 2007, Johnny participated in the marriage ceremony of his son Isaac Torres-Sifuentes and Keturah Lofton.
