Building Excuses
by Missionary Amelia Sifuentes-Torres
Romans 14:7-13 (Verse 12: So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God).
V. 7: For not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself;
No one lives for himself…no one dies for himself: The focus of the Christian life is never in ourselves because all of what we do should have the purpose to glorify our Sovereign Lord. (1Co. 6:20; 10:31)
V. 8-9: For, whether we live, we live for the Lord; or whether we die, we die for the Lord; therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and lived again, that He might be Lord for both of the dead and of the living.
The Lord of the dead and the Lord of the living: Christ died not only to set us free from sin, but to enslaved to Himself (Romans 6:22), and to highly exalted Himself as a Sovereign Lord of all the holy people that are in His presence in the heaven, and in the earth and under the earth. (Philippians 2:9-12; 1 Timothy 6:15; Revelation 17:14; 19:16)
V. 10: But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.
Judge…contempt: The contempt is equal to an erroneous judge because it is apply to somebody that is considered short of dignity and value; so it is erroneously understood that the person can be treat with disdain and abhorrence. Then the word “judge” has the same intensity and means to condemns. Paul use the terms as synonymous: the strongers used to judge the weakers with underestimation because they considered them as legalistic and just in their own opinion; however the weakers judge the strongers as irresponsibles and even depraved.
Your brother: a believer brother in Christ . The judgment seat of God. Each Christian should give account of himself and the Lord should judge the decisions he made, including all the ones that are related to the conscience. That verdict is the only one of importantance. (1 Co. 4:5) “For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord”. The Lord is the only judge qualified to examine the obedience, and fidelity of any human being. God knows the reasons, thoughts, and internal attitudes. Because the final rewards do not only depends of the external service, but of the internal devotion, God is the only one that knows the reward that each one deserve.
V. 11: For it is written: As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall give praise to God.
It is written: Isaiah 45:23 since the old time that every knee will bow and every tongue will swear allegiance and confess Jesus Christ as the Lord.
V. 12: So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God. One day we all will be in front of God and if we are being building excuses at that moment we are not going to have who will be defending us or who will be attending our excuses.
V. 13: Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother's way. Judge: in other words determine. Paul wants to stand out the fact that instead to submit our brothers in Christ to a judgment, the Christians should use a better judgment to help each other.
Put an obstacle or a stumbling block: Everything a Christian do, even when the scriptures allow it, that can cause another to fall in sin.
Colossians 1:10 - so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Walk in a manner worthy: Refers to the daily conduct: live in accordance to the position that you have in Christ, in other words, everything the Lords wants us to be in accordance with the power He gave us to be.
Bearing fruit in every good work: the spiritual fruit is the “natural” result of a righteous life. The Bible identify the spiritual fruit with acts like introduce people to Christ; worship the Lord; bring tithe and offerings to God; live a devout life; holy life: without it nobody will see the Lord.
Increasing in the knowledge of God: the spiritual growths is not coming separate from the knowledge of God. The evidence of the spiritual growth includes a deep love for the Word of God, a perfect growing obedience, a solid doctrinal fundament, a strong faith growing more and more each time, an increasing love for the souls that are in sins and for everybody (Psalms 119:97 = Oh, how Iove Your law! It is my meditation all the day).
But many Christians are hiding under the excuses to not walk in a worthy manner pleasing the Lord. The Bible register a lot of excuses that since the beginning of the creation the man gave to God:
1. Genesis 3:12: The man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate."= In a miserable manner Adam pass the responsibility to God for giving him Eve. But this made the situation worst because his sin was with knowledge, but he was not able to open his heart, confess his sin and repent from what he had done. He did not assume the responsibility of his sin that he committed without being deceit.
Genesis 3:13: And the woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." The woman blame the serpent, which was in part true, but that did not make her free from disobey God and from not believe in God’s word.
3. Gen 4: Then God called Moses to send him to bring his people, the sons of Israel out of Egypt. But Moses built excuses to God:
First excuse: "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?" It looks reasonable that Moses felt insignificant for that important and difficult mission: but God did not accept the excuse.
The second excuse: "Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you. They may say to me, 'What is His name?' What shall I say to them?" In this second excuse Moses was building excuses to God because he did not want to obey His order.
Third excuse: Gen 4:1 They will not believe me or listen to what I say. For they may say that God has not appeared to me. Only an excuse with no support.
Fourth excuse: Gen 4:10 I am slow of speech and slow of tongue: Only an excuse because God knew Moses and used to have long conversations with him, then God knew that Moses can accomplish the mission. But Moses built excuses to God.
Luke 14:18 - 20
The guest of the wedding began to make excuses. The guests represents the Israel people that were formally invited to be ready to receive the Messiah at any time. But at the time of the wedding all of them started to make excuses: and all of the excuses given sounded with a lot of hypocrisy.
First excuse: Luke 14:18 = I have bought a piece of land and I need to go out and look at it; please consider me excused. But nobody buy a property without look at it first, and because the purchase was already done; the issue was not urgent because the land will stay in the same place after the wedding
Second excuse: Luke 14:19 I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please consider me excused. Nobody buy yoe of oxen before trying them.
Third excuse: Luke 14:20 I have married a wife, and for that reason I cannot come. The just married man used to be excused to go to the army or to make business trips, but there was no reason to avoid a social engagement previously in scheduled.
Therefore, each one of us will be accountable of himself to God. Or one day each one of us will be in front of God and is going to be sad to see all the ones that tried to disguise their fault with an excuse.
Then every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be declared guilty to God. Then, there will not be any defense available in the final judge in front of God when God declare the man guilty from his excuses and disobedience. (Romans 3:19) On the contrary, in that day happiness and glory will be with the ones that let the excuses erased, their sins forgave and cleaned with the blood of Christ. The sin is not judge in the way we look at it but in the way that God see it.
